Burkina Faso Compact - Rural Land Governance
MCC’s $475 million Burkina Faso Compact (2009-2014) included the $58.2 million Rural Land Governance Project which sought to address issues related to farmers in Burkina Faso lacking legal recognition of land rights on their farms, which inhibited economic growth and agricultural productivity in the nation. The project contributed significantly to the adoption of the transformational 2009 Rural Land Law and trained more than 8,700 local officials in 47 rural communes on participatory land-use management, land-service operations and conflict mediation in accordance with the new laws. The activities were based on the theory that improved land tenure security, management, and access to land will lead to efficient and productive use of land.
